QueenEarth: April 2012 Announcements and Awards!

April 17, 2012 in QueenEarth

It’s been a long time . . . I’m so excited to update you all on my comings and goings. First off, QueenEarth & Friends is growing. I’ve got more friends in the FB group and the monthly event at Terra Cafe (101 E 25th St) is building momentum. Every third Saturday, more and more folks are coming out! I hope to see you on April 21st! We start rockin at 8pm. Doors open at 7pm. We are making this even more unique by providing seating at a family style table. Come early and meet all of the “& Friends” and enjoy a night of good food, music, and new friends! There is a $5/$10BYOB cover, well worth it. The food is also amazing and after all is said and done, you’ve probably spent less than you would in a bar for a “free” show. Come out and support local musicians, poets, and emcees :) This month features the ladies of the Fells Point female fronted open mic, The Clam Jam Band. I’ve also been getting some good reviews on the new album. Make sure you find me out and about to grab your copy! Here is my show calendar!

Speaking of good reviews, I was recently notified about an article from my alma mater! I graduated from Loyola. Loyola, and this music scene, called me to Baltimore. Here I am in their paper, The Greyhound! One of their writers went to a concert in Baltimore every Thursday and wrote a column about it. For this week, he assigned superlative names to his top choices out of the seventeen performances he went to this year. He saw QueenEarth and I got the award for “Embodiment of Baltimore Music.” This was a huge surprise and I’m extending a huge “thank you” and a hug to my Loyola family!

QueenEarth March 2012: Quarterly Report

February 27, 2012 in QueenEarth

The mighty month of March has some exciting news!! First off, I’m rockin at Gutierrez Studios (2010 Clipper Park Road, Baltimore, MD 21211) with the Madden Brothers and Santendrix on Friday from 6-9pm. Gutierrez Studios is a full-service design and fabrication firm specializing in contemporary architectural metalwork, furniture and lighting. Every First Friday of the month they host an open house where you can check out their showroom, tour their magnificent facility, and meet the craftsmen.  The event is FREE! This is one of my favorite venues in the city.  www.gutierrezstudios.com

Photo from my last show at Gutierrez Studios. The gentleman in the photo will be joining me this month at Terra Cafe!

Photo from my last show at Gutierrez Studios. The gentleman in the photo will be joining me this month at Terra Cafe!

I also have a March guest hosting spot at Marc Evans’ Acoustic Thursdays, QueenEarth & Friends with Dan Sam and Ian Spaceman, and my Bohemian Open Mic! Did you know? I’ve got a monthly Hagerstown dinner show at a lovely soul food restaurant? Wowsers! Go to http://www.queenearth.com/calendar-of-shows/ for a full schedule! I’ve been keeping busy and trying to add to the quality of my gigs! I asked/wished for more press and college shows in 2012. Thank you to the universe for listening!

Not only did I kickoff the African American Arts Festival at University of Baltimore in February, I also joined my artist in rhyme/guitar friend LOVE the poet at the Bmore Proud Leadership Summit at UMBC Bmore Proud! This summit promotes awareness and education of queer issues on college campuses. Bmore proud also encourages socializing and networking to cultivate student involvement and leadership in the queer community. After years of working in Higher Education, it is ironic that my first “real” educational conference experience was as a musician. Read about our presentation http://bmoreproud.org/sessions/! I wear many hats! I can “check-off” college gigs for 2012, and I’m hoping for some more opportunities.

“From the first sound that came though the speakers, I was calmly comforted and consoled. Hearing QueenEarth was like having a musical hug.  What I listened to was like a lullaby – her sound is smooth and serene, she plays from a pleasingly peaceful place.  Her delivery is delightful, and also diverse. “ Thank you Sara’s Soundcheck : ) http://sarassoundcheck.com/2012/02/27/queenearth-royal-rhapsody/#more-772. She also supports indie music artists like myself! Visit her website to get “in the know” about up and coming superstars! Good press is always good!

Join the QueenEarth & Friends Facebook group! http://www.facebook.com/groups/106172289511499/

Both of the opportunities above would not have been available without the help of my close friends. You know who you are and I thank you for spreading the word. The year 2011 was about creating my street team and becoming a voice for many other folks and their causes. There is community in collaboration. That is my quote. I’m putting it on a T-shirt as we speak ;) Speaking of Friends, join my new Facebook group, QueenEarth & Friends, to hear about my community of friends! Post the things you’re reading, hear about new shows in Baltimore, follow musicians from around the country/world etc. http://www.facebook.com/groups/106172289511499/. This group will also keep you posted about my monthly events, an open mic at Bohemian Coffee House (Last Wednesdays) and my live music show at Terra Cafe (3rd Saturdays), both of which feature friends in the music, poetry, and arts scene. All of this QueenEarth & Friends lovin’ wouldn’t be complete without a BRAND NEW LIVE AND ACOUSTIC ALBUM!! Details to follow at QueenEarth.com!

Other notable shows on my January calendar?

I’m playing Hagerstown, MD for the first time on January 13, 2012 from 8-10pm at Georgia Poor Boy Cafe (325 Virginia Ave, Hagerstown, MD 21740) · http://www.Georgiaboycafe.com

The first installment of QueenEarth & Friends kicks off on January 21, 2012 from 8-10pm. This is a new monthly dinner party that will feature collaborations between myself and some of my favorite poets, musicians, emcees and artist friends in the community. The first show features me and Irv and Alex Madden (bass, drums). There is a $5 cover and it is guaranteed to be a new Saturday hot spot in this lovely city. As always, I’m still rocking Fridays at Terra Cafe from 12-2pm.

The next Bohemian Coffeehouse Open Mic, hosted by yours truly, is on January 25th and Hollywood Infinite is featuring. She is a spoken word rhyming goddess. You’ll love it. If you came last time, you already know we fill the room with positive energy and provide an inclusive environment for everyone, listeners and performers. $2 gets you in at 1821 N Charles St for the newest open mic experience. Did I mention, it’s BYOB? Anna Zoe (http://www.facebook.com/annazoemusic) is on tour and I’m playing with her at Bohemian on Friday the 20th at 7pm. The show is FREE!!

Did you know? I give guitar lessons. While I consider my first gift to be as a singer/songwriter, I would not be QueenEarth without the help of my guitar. More than serving as a tool to supplement my voice and lyrics, I believe the guitar has taught me so much about music and it has given me the ability to express myself when I have no words. I’ve taught my students online and “on-the-ground.” My skill set ranges from rhythm guitar and creativity to songwriting and chord progressions. My students have given me positive feedback.

“I have been a college professor at a major university in Maryland for about 10 years and I have also developed new faculty members so I am more than qualified to recognize master teaching in the context of any genre and QueenEarth is the real deal. I am one of her students and was amazed at how quickly I progressed in learning the guitar, although I have a long way to go. Don’t settle for in-between……learn from the Queen.” – Bridal Pearson, Ph.D

New November for QueenEarth

November 1, 2011 in QueenEarth

This month is a full of new news. I’m playing at some new places for new audiences and doing some new covers. First on deck, I really want to to tell you about my Farmer’s Market Tour. I finish up the tour on Sunday in Annapolis. Check out my blog http://www.queenearth.com/2011/10/queenearths-farmers-market-tour/. It has been a bountiful summer/fall. I got my first Farmer’s Market gig because a friend made a referral. Someone liked my music and they told some else and before I knew it, I was on a little mini tour and rubbing elbows with the best farmers and food vendors in the area. Big thank you to everyone involved!

Like any artist/business woman, I’m always looking for new ways to get my name out there. All of you have been great with the word of mouth help and telling your friends about QueenEarth. Because of you, I am able to continue doing what I do. All of the gigs this month are due to you spreading the love. Thank you for that and props to these new establishments. It is a New November!

  • First off, my weekly open mic is at a new time. These past few weeks, we’ve seen some momentum and we want more folks to come through. The people have spoken and asked for a later time. Done!! The weekly Wednesday Bohemian Dinner Party is now from 6-8pm at Bohemian Coffee House.  It is BYOB and FREE to listen or perform.  They also have great food, vegan and vegetarian options, and they support local businesses. Check them out at http://bmorebohemian.com/ I can’t be there this week so my homegirl Teporah is filling in for me. She’s excited because they have a piano! Check out her music and stop by! Teporah is a queen of music in this city and always supports artists, whether they’re local or passing through on tour. When I began my journey, she was my oracle. I’m paying it forward and asking that you give her a listen (http://teporah.blogspot.com/). You will not be disappointed!
  • On Wednesday, I’m playing at Joe Squared Station North for the first time. That is why I cannot be at my open mic this week :( but props to Teporah for filling in while I’m gone. I will be accompanied by my baby bruh Santendrix ;) I play the 7-9pm dinner set on Wednesday November, 3, 2011. For Joe Squared, come hungry. The food is great and I’m sure you’ll like some of the new covers. This show is FREE!! http://www.joesquared.com/station-north/
  • For my Baltimore fans on the Eastside of the city, I’m playing at Chef Mac’s on the 19th. They heard me at the Hamilton-Lauraville Market!

I’ve heard, from one of my musician friends, and my favorite Bassplayer Ian “Spaceman” Trusheim,  that this is one of his favorite venues in the city. He says that food is outrageous. It’s my first time so wish me luck ;) http://www.chefmacs.com/ If they like me, maybe I’ll come back with my band!

  • I’m returning to Fells Point for November at Riptide by the Bay on the 22nd and 29th. Come around 8:30pm.

I’ll be there for a few hours with Dan Sam of Funk Friday and his magical djembe hands :D http://riptidebythebay.net/ This connection at Riptide began over a year ago at the Austin Ellis’ Austin Grill open mic. Remember that spot? It was the best open mic during the summer of 2010!

As always, I’m rockin at Terra Café (101 E 25th Street) every Friday from 12-2pm. For more shows and information, guitar lessons, and blog updates, visit my website at http://www.queenearth.com. I’ll be posting new stories periodically to document my adventures! Special shout out to Anna K. Stone for taking the awesome photos at the Gutierrez Memorial Walk. Thank you all for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you out and about.
